Welcome to issue 111 of Chicane. It is the Elise special issue and as I’m sure you can imagine, this magazine could have been 10 times as thick and we wouldn’t be able to cover everything we wanted to. That is the hardest part of being editor, deciding what not to include. Still I hope you enjoy what we have in this issue. On top of the main Elise feature we have an interview with former Lotus design chief, Julian Thomson and an interview with the inspiration for the Elise name, Elisa Artioli. We also take a look at the most significant Elise models to date as well as driving the latest Elise Sport 220. As always, Jim Grant has provided us with a thrilling read in the form of his Scottish Snippets. We also have reports on the North Coast 500 run, Wessex Tales and a member puts a spotlight on a very special Lotus dealer. Insight this time takes a look at the latest and most extreme cars to come from Hethel as well the return of the Lotus Driving Academy.
You may be intrigued by the colour scheme we picked for this issue of Chicane. This one for me is a purely selfish choice. The first time I saw the S1 Elise was on the cover of Autocar magazine in my local newsagent. They used the same odd colour palate we’ve chosen for this issue. As an homage to that very famous cover, we’ve used the same image and colour scheme. Hopefully those of you who first saw the Elise on that cover will like the reference.
I hope you enjoy this issue and as always, keep the great submissions coming and always feel free to give us feedback on the magazine.
